Maine's health care crisis, driven by global trends, is unsolvable by state-level cost caps alone, warns outgoing hospital chief Steven Michaud.
Steven Michaud, stepping down after 26 years leading the Maine Hospital Association, said Maine’s health care affordability crisis is unsolvable due to global trends like rising medical costs, longer lifespans, and increasing labor and operational expenses.
He warned a proposed state bill capping hospital charges at 200% of Medicare rates would shift costs without fixing root issues, potentially cutting $1.2 billion from hospital budgets by 2028.
Michaud cited a 160% rise in Maine’s per capita hospital spending since 2001 and noted national health care costs surged to $4.9 trillion by 2023.
He emphasized that medical advances and workforce challenges make sustained cost control extremely difficult, calling the crisis a systemic, worldwide problem.
