Photographer Suzanne Phoenix ends her 15-year Women’s Day exhibition series due to financial unsustainability, despite its national recognition.
Photographer Suzanne Phoenix is showcasing her 15th annual International Women’s Day exhibition in the Yarra Valley, featuring 23 black-and-white portraits of women and gender-diverse individuals, including musicians Janet English and Candice Lorrae.
Known for her raw, unfiltered style, Phoenix directs subjects to express fierceness rather than conform to expectations, often asking them to “look at me like you don’t like me.” Each portrait is accompanied by a personal statement, and the series, now totaling 200 images, has been acquired by institutions including State Library Victoria and the National Library of Australia.
Phoenix, who began photography inspired by her grandmother, views her work as a form of authentic documentation and a counter to the commercialized, performative nature of International Women’s Day in Australia.
Despite the project’s significance, she has decided it is no longer financially sustainable and is seeking employment, leaving the future of the series uncertain.
