Hunter College associate professor Allyson Friedman is under review after being caught on a live microphone making racially charged remarks during a February 10 virtual meeting of the Community Education Council in Manhattan.

Speaking during a discussion about proposed school closures, Friedman said Black students were “too dumb to know they’re in a bad school” and suggested “if you train a Black person well enough, they’ll know to use the back.” The comments, made while she believed her microphone was off, drew immediate condemnation from city officials, educators, and the public.

Friedman later apologized, explaining she was attempting to discuss systemic racism with her child using a racist trope, and stated the remarks did not reflect her beliefs.

Hunter College called the comments “abhorrent” and confirmed it is reviewing the incident under its conduct and nondiscrimination policies.
