Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala criticized India’s new interim trade framework with the U.S., questioning the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” claim and warning it risks making India “America-nirbhar.” He argued the deal, announced February 13, 2026, undermines farmers, energy security, and digital independence by opening markets to U.S. agricultural and industrial goods like fruits, soybean oil, wine, and dried distillers’ grains.
Surjewala raised concerns over existing cotton imports depressing prices and demanded clarity on whether staples like milk, wheat, and dairy are included in zero-tariff provisions.
