Bowman, who converted to Catholicism as a child, taught in Wisconsin, co-founded the National Black Sisters’ Conference, and helped create the 1987 hymnal “Lead Me, Guide Me.” Her 1989 speech to U.S. bishops, where she shared a spiritual song and affirmed the Church as her home, became iconic.
