A new study warns HbA1c tests may misdiagnose diabetes in South Asia due to widespread blood disorders, delaying treatment.
A new study published in The Lancet Regional Health: Southeast Asia on February 9, 2026, warns that the HbA1c test may give inaccurate results for millions in South Asia, including India, due to high rates of anaemia, haemoglobinopathies, and G6PD deficiency, which can falsely lower or raise readings.
These conditions, especially prevalent in India, may delay diabetes diagnosis by up to four years, particularly in men with undetected G6PD deficiency, and compromise public health data.
Researchers urge replacing or supplementing HbA1c with oral glucose tolerance tests, self-monitoring, fructosamine, or continuous glucose monitoring, especially in low-resource areas, and recommend routine hematologic screening to improve diagnosis accuracy and care outcomes.
