Though the bill was amended to limit community colleges to three degrees and require a 50-mile buffer from four-year schools, leaders from Drake, St. Ambrose, and others say it threatens private colleges’ sustainability and questions the existence of “education deserts.” They emphasize their institutions’ existing flexible programs and transfer partnerships, warning the bills set a dangerous precedent despite claims from lawmakers that they expand access to affordable higher education.
