Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called the dispute with New Zealand First over the India free trade agreement a "mature disagreement," rejecting claims that it could bring tens of thousands of workers to New Zealand.
He said the deal allows 1,700 non-renewable, highly skilled temporary visas annually, drawn from the existing green list, and eliminates tariffs on all Indian imports while granting tariff-free or reduced tariffs on 95% of New Zealand’s exports to India.
Luxon maintained Peters is wrong on both the China and India FTAs, noting NZ First withdrew support before the agreement’s finalization.
He also said he was unaware of Resources Minister Shane Jones’ reported stance against New Zealand joining a global fossil fuel phase-out roadmap, stating he had not been briefed.
