Severe winter weather to raise U.S. heating costs 9%, exceeding inflation, with 1 in 6 households struggling to pay, despite delayed aid.
Harsh winter weather is expected to hit much of the U.S., driving heating costs up over 9%—more than three times the inflation rate—leading to an average household expenditure of $995 this winter, $84 more than last year, according to the National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA).
About one in six households already struggles to pay energy bills, and while financial aid through LIHEAP is available after a delay from last year’s government shutdown, NEADA warns that demand will likely exceed the nearly 6 million households that current funds can assist.
