Vietnam begins building its first chip factory to achieve semiconductor self-reliance by 2050.
Viettel, Vietnam’s military-run telecom company, has begun constructing the country’s first semiconductor fabrication plant in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park near Hanoi.
The 27-hectare facility, expected to start trial production by late 2027, aims to enable Vietnam to participate in all stages of the semiconductor value chain, including wafer fabrication, which has not been done domestically.
The plant will focus on chips for aerospace, telecom, medical, and automotive sectors.
Construction and technology transfer are set for completion by end of 2026, with ongoing refinements and upgrades through 2030.
The project supports Vietnam’s national goal of semiconductor self-reliance by 2050, including training 50,000 chip engineers by 2030 and expanding its semiconductor workforce to over 100,000 by 2040.
