French historian Vincent Lemire denied entry to Israel, his visa revoked without explanation, sparking concerns over academic freedom and possible retaliation.
French historian Vincent Lemire, a longtime expert on Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, was denied entry to Israel days before a planned trip, with his two-year electronic travel authorization revoked without explanation.
Lemire, who previously led the French Research Centre in Jerusalem and has visited Israel regularly for 25 years, said his criticism of Israel’s military operations in Gaza is longstanding and academic, not anti-Israel.
He expressed concern over the impact on academic freedom and believes the move may be retaliatory, especially following France’s 2024 recognition of Palestinian statehood and Israel’s recent barring of 37 foreign humanitarian groups from Gaza.
