Northern Ireland’s environment minister warns politicians are ignoring science on Lough Neagh’s ecological crisis, demanding urgent, evidence-based action.
Northern Ireland’s Environment Minister Andrew Muir has warned that some politicians are undermining scientific evidence on the worsening ecological crisis at Lough Neagh, the UK and Ireland’s largest freshwater lake, which has faced toxic blue-green algae blooms for three consecutive summers due to pollution and climate change.
He stressed that recovery will take decades, emphasized the need for science-based policies, and reaffirmed commitment to ambitious climate targets, including a 33% annual emissions reduction and net zero by 2050.
Muir
With the DUP blocking his proposal for an independent environmental protection agency, Muir said a private member’s bill may be introduced, calling the delay undemocratic.
He defended peer-reviewed research, criticized attempts to discredit it, and called for stronger enforcement of pollution rules and continued implementation of the Lough Neagh Recovery Plan.
