Experts in China launch initiative to reduce urban roadkill using citizen science data and conservation strategies.
A December 14 forum in Nanjing gathered over 60 experts from 19 institutions to tackle rising urban roadkill in China, spurred by a 2020 incident where a professor witnessed a Siberian weasel killed on a city street.
This led to China’s first research paper on urban roadkill, published in November 2023, and a nationwide WeChat-based citizen science project launched in late 2023 that has collected over 8,000 roadkill reports from more than 2,000 contributors.
The data is being used to monitor biodiversity, identify at-risk species, and inform conservation solutions like wildlife crossings and biofences, emphasizing collaboration between scientists, policymakers, and the public to reduce road-related wildlife deaths in rapidly developing cities.
