A BC project uses Indigenous knowledge to restore wildfire-damaged land, creating jobs and boosting forest health.
The Palmer Project, launched in November 2024 in British Columbia’s Central Chilcotin region, is rehabilitating land damaged by 2017 wildfires using Indigenous knowledge and community-led efforts.
It has treated 1,000 hectares, removing 100,000 cubic meters of dead biomass and low-grade wood, much of which is being used by pulp and bioenergy facilities despite industry shifts.
The project supports 81 jobs, generates $4 in economic return per dollar invested, and helps restore forest resilience, wildlife habitats, and traditional land use, with funding from the Forest Enhancement Society of BC and Natural Resources Canada.
