Spain to create nationwide climate shelters to combat extreme heat after deadly 2025 summer.
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced a national network of climate shelters in public buildings to protect citizens from extreme heat, following the country’s hottest summer on record in 2025, which saw prolonged heatwaves, over 3,800 heat-related deaths—a 87% to 88% increase from 2024—and more than 400,000 hectares burned in wildfires.
The shelters, to be established ahead of next summer, will provide air-conditioned spaces with seating and free water, targeting vulnerable groups and building on existing regional efforts like Barcelona’s 400 cooling centers.
The government will fund the initiative in hardest-hit areas, with additional €20 million each for flood and wildfire prevention in small towns.
The plan, part of broader climate measures, awaits parliamentary approval and is framed as a non-political response to intensifying climate impacts.
