South Carolina State Superintendent Ellen Weaver is urging lawmakers to cap severance payments for departing school superintendents at one year’s salary or remaining contract value, whichever is less, to prevent large "golden parachute" payouts.

The proposal, backed by Senate Education Committee chair Greg Hembree, aims to redirect taxpayer funds to classrooms and comes after several superintendents received six-figure settlements even after being fired.

If included in the 2026 state budget, the rule would take effect July 1, 2026.
