Wales’ education chief warns a stagnant budget threatens frontline services despite receiving £326M in new funds.
Wales’ education secretary Lynne Neagle told the Senedd that her department’s 2026/27 budget increase of £44.9 million—just 2% above inflation—is far below the £242 million in additional revenue and £84 million in capital funding Wales received from national fiscal adjustments.
She said nearly 24% of the new funds went to public-sector pay, with the rest allocated to core services, special educational needs, schools, and post-16 education.
Neagle warned that a “standstill” budget, lacking a £262 million council funding boost, risks real-terms cuts and urged for a larger share of a £380 million cross-government reserve fund, stressing the need to protect frontline education services.
