Australian climate activist Ben Pennings says he has won a major legal battle after Adani’s Australian mining arm, Bravus, dropped a five-and-a-half-year lawsuit seeking $600 million in damages over protests against the Carmichael coal mine.
Pennings, who called the case the largest SLAPP suit in Australian history, claimed it was a tactic to intimidate him and his family, including surveillance of his children.
Though a court ordered him not to seek or encourage others to obtain Adani’s confidential information, he maintains the settlement allows non-violent protest.
The case, which cost $1.2 million in legal fees funded by 20,000 supporters, ended with both sides expressing satisfaction, and Adani agreeing not to pursue legal costs.
