Ontario PC government blocked safety bill for northern highways, citing political motives despite rising safety concerns.
MPP Guy Bourgouin claims the Ontario PC government's rejection of Bill 49 was politically motivated, despite its goal of improving safety on northern highways.
The bill, co-sponsored by two NDP MPPs, would have required certified MTO truck driver testing, extended scale operations, increased OPP presence, and returned winter road maintenance to the MTO.
Bourgouin cited 185 fraudulent licenses found in a recent inspection and criticized reduced inspections since 2016, which he says enabled unsafe driving and inadequate snow removal by private contractors.
He noted the transportation minister acknowledged the bill fell short but said the government blocked committee review, denying input from northern communities.
The ministry did not comment on the defeat.
