Brazilian nationals were arrested in Guyana’s Iwokrama Protected Area, a UNESCO-recognized rainforest reserve, for illegal gold mining disguised as tourism.

Flaviano Teixiera-Costa was taken into custody on November 1, 2025, alongside Jose Do Santos Silvino, arrested earlier on October 8, during a joint operation by Guyana’s Geology and Mines Commission, police, and Iwokrama Rangers.
