Montana plans to restrict teacher PD conferences promoting political views, sparking debate over ideology and education funding.
Montana Senate President Matt Regier has requested a bill draft for the 2027 Legislature to restrict teacher professional development conferences he says promote political agendas, following recordings from a Montana Federation of Public Employees (MFPE) conference that highlighted discussions on book bans, gender ideology, and art censorship.
Regier and State Superintendent Susie Hedalen argue taxpayer-funded PIR days should not support what they call ideological indoctrination, while MFPE defends the event as legitimate professional development with nearly 1,000 educators attending and claims the recordings are misleading.
The conference, held for over 30 years during mandatory October training days, is one of several events scheduled then, including student music festivals and hunts.
Critics say the proposed legislation unfairly targets educators and distracts from teacher recruitment and retention.
