Proposed changes to New Zealand’s earthquake-prone building rules could allow Rotorua’s historic Blue Baths to reopen after being closed since 2021.
The reforms, part of the Building (Earthquake-Prone Building System Reform) Amendment Bill, aim to replace the current 34% threshold with a new system based on building materials, height, and location, potentially removing about 55% of structures from the earthquake-prone list.
The bill is expected to pass into law early next year after a select committee review.
Mayor Tania Tapsell hopes the changes will make restoring heritage buildings safer and more affordable, while a nearby Pak’nSave store has already completed seismic upgrades exceeding required standards.
