Aviation group urges FAA to revise drone rule, citing safety risks and flawed altitude assumptions.
The vertical aviation community, led by Vertical Aviation International, is urging the FAA to revise its proposed Part 108 rule for beyond visual line of sight drone operations, arguing it relies on flawed assumptions about low-altitude airspace use, particularly the claim that manned aircraft don’t operate below 400 feet—contradicted by routine helicopter use in emergency and agricultural operations.
The group warns the rule could increase collision risks, improperly prioritize drones over less maneuverable manned aircraft, and undermine safety, calling for stronger detect-and-avoid systems, restrictions on shielded areas, exclusion of recreational drones, and retention of the 400-foot altitude limit.
