UK Faith and Communities Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh has backed former footballer Gary Neville’s criticism of rising societal division, following a synagogue attack in Manchester.
Neville expressed concern over the Union Jack being used in a divisive way, removing it from a property development, and blamed rising polarization on figures he described as “angry, middle-aged white men” and the aftermath of Brexit.
Fahnbulleh acknowledged the concerns, noting division is being exploited across communities amid economic hardship, though the attacker was not from the group Neville referenced.
Both urged unity, condemned hate speech, and called on the government to combat division and strengthen community bonds.
