CFMEU boss Zach Smith met with crime-linked figure Mick Gatto, sparking scrutiny over union corruption and reform efforts.
In September 2025, CFMEU Victorian chief Zach Smith arranged a private meeting with Mick Gatto, a figure linked to organized crime and previously banned by the union, despite Smith’s public pledge to cut ties with gangland-linked “fixers.” The meeting, related to a Melbourne Airport contractor dispute, prompted criticism and an investigation by union administrator Mark Irving, who introduced new rules restricting contact with such figures.
While no criminal wrongdoing was found, the incident raised concerns about the union’s anti-corruption efforts and public trust in government-led reforms to clean up the construction industry, which remains under administration.
