Vanuatu’s PM rebukes Australia’s minister over claims that Vanuatu’s police talks with China were misleading.
Australia’s Pacific minister Pat Conroy faced criticism from Vanuatu’s Police Minister Andrew Napuat, who urged Conroy to “check his facts” after he downplayed reports of Vanuatu pursuing a policing memorandum with China.
Napuat clarified the move was a government-wide decision aimed at clarifying rules for foreign police cooperation without establishing a permanent Chinese presence, noting China already has a limited policing role in Vanuatu and that the country had informed Australia.
Conroy, while affirming respect for Vanuatu’s sovereignty, said such discussions were not unexpected as Australia negotiates its own security agreement with the nation.
Sources said Conroy’s comments were taken out of context and did not reflect disagreement with Vanuatu’s government.
Australia continues to promote security partnerships in the Pacific that exclude or limit Chinese involvement, as seen in similar deals with Nauru and Papua New Guinea, and remains hopeful a new agreement with Vanuatu will be finalized despite the stalled $500 million development pact over concerns about restricting other nations’ funding.
