A Nigerian court orders a medical panel to assess IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu’s fitness for trial due to health concerns.
A Nigerian federal high court in Abuja has ordered the Nigerian Medical Association to form a team of eight to ten medical experts to assess the fitness of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to stand trial, following his request for transfer to the National Hospital due to alleged serious health issues.
The court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, directed the panel—include the chief medical director of the National Hospital—to evaluate Kanu’s medical condition, the adequacy of DSS detention facilities, and whether his health prevents trial participation.
The findings, signed by the chairman and secretary, must be submitted within eight days.
The ruling comes after conflicting medical reports and arguments from Kanu’s defense and the prosecution, with the court affirming a prima facie case exists for terrorism charges.
The court also rejected Kanu’s no-case submission, requiring him to present his defense.
