Indian minister urges stronger farmer support amid global price pressures, promoting biofuels to cut imports and pollution.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stressed on September 24, 2025, that Indian farmers need stronger government support as global markets dictate prices for key crops like corn, soybean, sugar, and oil, leaving farmers vulnerable despite agriculture employing 65% of the population and contributing only 14% to GDP.
He cited a rise in corn prices from ₹1,200 to ₹2,800 per quintal after bio-ethanol production began, which caused economic strain, yet farmers earned ₹45,000 crore from ethanol sales.
Gadkari promoted diversifying agriculture into energy sectors, highlighting biofuels as a way to cut India’s ₹22 lakh crore annual fossil fuel import bill and reduce transport-related air pollution, which accounts for 40% of emissions.
He expressed confidence in India’s potential to lead in sustainable aviation fuel and transition from energy importer to exporter.
