Global oceans have darkened over 75 million square kilometers in two decades, threatening marine ecosystems.
Researchers from the University of Plymouth found that over the past two decades, more than a fifth of the global ocean has darkened, affecting about 75 million square kilometers, equivalent to the combined land area of Europe, Africa, China, and North America.
This darkening impacts the upper water layer where 90% of marine species live, potentially disrupting marine ecosystems, global fisheries, and carbon and nutrient turnover.
The causes include coastal nutrient loading and changes in algal blooms and sea surface temperatures in open waters.
